Old Farmhouse Remodel

Here is a picture of our Ribbonwood Cottage, really an old farmhouse...before the addition....quaint...we started out with 2 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bath, tiny kitchen, and tinier closets...
the house was in foreclosure when we bought it 23 years ago.
Then we decided we needed to add on...haha..it's funny...the kids are gone...and now we are expanding! Actually we have added on before so that we had 4 bedrooms, and 3 baths. The house has gotten longer each time but this time was for my parents who are in their 80's.
It has taken months...we had no idea what we were in for...
Below is the house today. We are finally nearing the end. Hubby and I made a pact to stay peaceful and not to be ugly during the process. We had heard horror stories of total house remodels and what it does to your marriage.

This was our bedroom downstairs at Christmas with quilts on it....I collect quilts and have them for all the seasons. !

When we added on to our home...we moved upstairs to the boys rooms (they are gone to college..one is married) and gave my parents the downstairs master bedroom and bathroom. The addition is their new living room, kitchen and dining area. It is our assisted living to them. I will say here for friends and family, they did help with the remodel financially...it became a larger project than any of us anticipated.

We do their meals and help drive them to medical appointments...etc. We felt like we really needed to do this. I want to look back at my life and not regret that I didn't do things right..where they are concerned. My dad has been a faithful minister all his life...I felt like God wants me to honor him and my mom...they have honored God... and I was raised that in everything you do...finish strong!

So this meant that we had to repaint the entire upstairs and remodel everything from boys stuff, posters, Playstation equipments, totally a guys area to an adult area!
I really wanted it to be peaceful, calm, serene...you get the picture?
This was the picture right before we started tearing into walls...

With plug ins, cords everywhere, and furniture that housed every Apple product known to man...hahaha...we unplugged, repainted, moved out old furniture and repainted what could be saved and turned it into an area we would enjoy. I don't know about you...but boys rooms seem to scream 'smelly socks'...hahaha...
So the floors HAD to be cleaned.

Here is the room today...not done but I wanted you to see it. We had to take the ball finials off the four poster bed...the ceiling was too slanted for them to fit. And we got this kingsize bed from a thrift store in Palm Springs for 86.00 dollars.YIPEEE! We got it on our 30th anniversary day...it was such a gift from God. Our daughter's room has our old queensize bed in it now. The beds are very similar.

One of the old cabinets that housed the Playstation, Dvd player, etc...everything got a new coat of white paint.

Below are pictures of our bathroom. This is the new part of the house. There was only a single toilet upstairs...and it was old and awful...probably the only original thing left. I feel very blessed to have this new bathroom.
When you live in an old farmhouse...somethings are just old no matter how much you paint or redecorate! hahaha...you just learn to make do. Everything in this bathroom...

is from thrift shopping....using new ways to decorate with the old, vintage, chippy, things I have learned to appreciate.

Well, thanks for visiting. It has been a lot of work that I now feel blessed to enjoy the finished product. And that white door, next to the hutch...is a wonderful walk in closet...all for me.

thank you God!

It's beautiful and a very sweet, sweet thing to do for your mum and dad, sweetpea.

Hubs and I went through 2 remodels when we lived in California and it almost caused us heart failure. We survived but I'm not sure about our builder! But it was all worth it.

Don't tell me you have more Apple Products than me, chick; just say it ain't so!!!! I have 6 Macs in this house at the moment. Hah.

Also today I'm doing a Ribbon Tree that you might like to see. I'll post soon about it. I schedule them about a month in advance unless something fantastic happens to strike my mind.....LOL

Oh, it turned out so beautiful. I too have been playing with the idea to make an addition to my little cottage. It was also bought in a foreclosure. It was a mess when I first got it but I'm gradually getting it all fixed up. I love your addition with the balcony. Thank you for the inspiration. You are a true blessing to your parents and you will be blessed for this.

Your home is beautiful, but what stands out to me is how beautiful you are inside and out - to express the love you do - to your family - it's just inspirational. Give your sweet hubs a big hug - I think he deserves one for adding on to your house and making it your dream home!
