I want to share a few little tips on pie crust making! Stay with me now!

Have you ever made pie crust? You either get the hang of it or you don't. I thought for those of you who might struggle with pie (play) dough that I would share a few easy tips that I have learned over the years (I'm still a young 29ish gal)ok I'm over by a couple of years! Then I will give you the recipe that never fails me....
First you add your dry ingredients....

3 CUPS FLOUR
3/4 TSP SALT
1 CUP SHORTENING
Mix together the liquid ingredients first then add to the above mixture
10-12 TBSP ICE COLD WATER
3 TBSP WHITE VINEGAR
Next at our house you go out and gather all the eggs from the chicken pen in this little egg basket, where's the handle? How do you carry it....?

1 BEATEN EGG
I love using fresh eggs, alot of times I use them before they ever make it to the refrigerator....Way too many eggs.
Omelette anyone?
I use a fork or two knives and I cut in the shortening into the flour/salt mixture. When it is crumbly I then add the liquid mixture a little bit at a time. I either use my big Kitchen Aid mixer or I use my hands to mix it...I like to use my hands because there is a texture you feel and you know you have it right. It feels like smooth play dough, or smooth (not sticky) cookie dough...
You mix it together, and roll it out with a heavily floured rolling pin~which is only to be used for pie making~don't chase any family members with one! After it is rolled out into a large circle (bigger than the pie plate!) you start to roll the dough up on your rolling pin like so....

Next you mosie (this is a farm word used for cows heading over to the hay~mosie on over to the hay)over to your pie plate and carefully set it down on one side and then begin to unroll it!

Two things I have learned...if your dough is crumbly you need to add a TBSP of shortening at a time, mixing it in...like you would add glue to dry ingredients...if your dough does not hold together(not crumbly just not holding together) it needs a little more shortening and probably a tiny bit of ICE COLD WATER.
I always use ice cold water, this holds the doughy pieces of flour together with the shortening.
Next you add (my)your favorite filling! Cook and voila, it is delicious. I love a piece of pie with a cup of coffee and my favorite creamer! Yum!

I've always had problems with pie crusts so I usually used the pillsbury already made crusts...your tuturial seems very easy. Thanks for sharing it.
Oh, yes, I'd love an omelet, thank you! My family doesn't care for them, but I could eat them every day!
Oh, thanks for the pie crust tips! I have never heard of adding vinegar! Neat! My Mama made the best pie crusts ever! And "cat-head biscuits" too! And all by hand. She never had a fancy mixer to use, and probably wouldn't have it she had one! I do okay with pie crusts about 85% of the time, but I have never been able to replicate her yummy biscuits.
I think I have already posted once to be entered in your give awy, but feel free to add me again if you want! LOL! :D
You have a great day!
So that is what I was doing wrong - chasing people with the rolling pin. Debbie, I always learn something good when I come over here!! Seriously, I think this is the recipe my mom used for years and lost! I am saving this one!!
i am going to try your pie crust recipe. i have never been able to get it right.
can i have ham and cheese on the omelet?? :)
Thanks for the tips! The coffee looks good, too! I am drinking coffee with Coffeemate's Pumpkin Spice creamer in it right now...and it's sooo good!
I can't remember if I've added my name to your giveaway or not, but if I haven't please add it. If I already have, please forgive me!
Well you sure make the pie crust sound easy....like you do everything!!! I can't believe all those eggs!!! You must have to put an egg or eggs in every single meal you eat...lol
Oh, and I'll take my omelet with ham and cheese just like simple-needs........
Thanks Debbie for the pie crust recipe and tips, I love to bake but pies have always been my nemisis, now I will have to try out your recipe and see if it works for me. I have one question and this could be "why" I have trouble with pie crusts, what do you use for shortening?
Cheri
Oh my gosh, will you make me a pie?? And the coffee sounds heavenly...definitely going to try it!
Linda's comment is hysterical...my kind of lady!
My pie crust tastes great but I can't ever seem to crimp the edges and make it look nice like you did. Do you use those crust protectors that keep the edges from burning too?
I don't have much luck with pie crusts...do you REALLY think I could make this one? Hmmmm..I might try! lol!
Now that's alot of eggs! YOu are ready to make some serious omelets, I'd say! That sounds pretty good about now!
Can't wait for the giveaway drawing...pick me, pick me! :)
Have a great day, Debbie!

Blessings,
Kathy
Hi Debbie:
I've never had any luck making pie crusts, but I am going to write your method down and give it a shot. How many chickens do you have to get that many eggs? My hubby said yesterday, "I think I will build a chicken coop so we can get a few chickens." I about fell off my chair. I've been wanting chickens ever since we moved here. I guess I need to research a little and see how to feed them.

i have never made a pie..yours look so yummy..
have a great weekend..
I do love that pie crust recipe. It is the only one that works for me. Have a happy Halloween. Mimi
Hey Debbie! What a coincidence! Remember me? My mom and I used to sell your eggs at the farmers market! Im glad I found your blog, i love it! :)
Beautiful pie Debbie! A work of art!
I love that you guys can go out and gather eggs...We go thru so many eggs at my house it isn't even funny! But I live in the city so I buy the organic brown eggs (they are expensive but taste SO much better)
I am learning to make gluten free pie crust (I can't eat gluten) I have found a new almond and coconut flour that I think is going to change my life for the better. Most gluten free flours aren't worth trying.
Your pumpking pies look amazing!

Oh my that coffee sounds delightful!

Your pie crust recipe is heading onto my list of new year resolutions. I am determined to make my "own" pie all the way. I never understood the "easy as pie" phrase.
Thanks for the tips.
I'm a Pillsbury girl too-- but really admire those you create the miracle from scratch---
What a wonderful blog you have. I love visiting you everyday to see what new things you have written about.
Please enter me in your giveaway for your Blessing Book. I may have to add pages to it though. The Lord has blessed me and my family in so many ways that I doubt there would be enough room to list them all.
Blessings to you and your family.
Great tutorial! Thanks so much. Pie crust is something I struggle with & lately just use the cheater grocery store crusts...the kind you unroll. Some people just have a knack for it & know exactly what to add...like you! You've given me the inspiration to try again.
Take care, DebraK
Love the coffee idea. Have you ever tried ziplock baggie omelets? They are fun and easy. Love the blessing book. You are so creative.
Have a great weekend!!
Hi, I also use the premade piecrusts, but admire anyone who makes their own! The spiced coffee sounds yummy! Please enter me in your drawing! I'm enjoying your blog! Patti
